    Zubin mehta was born into a musical family in Mumbai in 1936. His father, Meiwan Mehta, was an excellent violinist, violinist teacher and conductor, and the founder of the Mumbai Symphony Orchestra and String Quartet. Zubin mehta received a formal violin and piano education when he was seven years old, so he was very familiar with European music when he was very young. As a student of his father, he conducted the Mumbai Symphony Orchestra at the age of 16. But he followed his parents’ wishes to study medicine. But after two semesters of classes, he turned to music. At the age of 18, he went to the Vienna Conservatory of Music to study piano and compose music. He completed his studies as a conductor under Hans Swarovski.


    In 1958, he won the Liverpool International Conductor Competition and served as the deputy conductor of a local orchestra. In his twenties, Mehta has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic. And to this day, they still maintain a close cooperative relationship. He won the second place in the American Tanglewood Conductor Competition (the first place was abbado). At this time, he met Charles Monch, the commander of Boston Symphony Orchestra, who had a profound influence on Meta. In 1960, he first cooperated with new york Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra and Montreal Symphony Orchestra, and from 1962 to 1966, he was the chief conductor of Montreal Symphony Orchestra.


    Zubin mehta was the music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra from 1962 to 1978. In 1969, he became the music consultant of Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, in 1977, he became the chief conductor, and in 1981, he became the lifelong music director. In 1978, he became the music director of new york Philharmonic, which lasted for 13 years until his successor KurtMasur arrived.


    In terms of opera, he has conducted opera performances in Montreal, metropolitan opera, Vienna State Opera House, Bavarian State Opera House, Royal Opera House in London and Covent Garden.


    Since 1998, Mehta has been the music director of the Bavarian National Opera House. Zubin mehta is an honorary citizen of Florence and became an honorary member of vienna state opera in 1997. In early 2004, he became an honorary member of Munich Philharmonic.
